March 22-23, 2010
The students will be able to write
and speak
critically about literature.The
students will be able
to read critically and ask pertinent
questions
regarding character roles in The
Great Gatsby.
Students will analyze characters
and settings in
the novella.

Due today:
College Portfolio: Binders with
awards, Calendar.
Aim: Who are the characters that
we are
introduced to in The Great Gatsby,
and
what are the important settings in
Chapter 1?

Do Now: I would like one student to
read
their journal for chapter 1.  The rest
of the
class should take notes.

Mini Lesson: Characterization as a
literary
device.
MAJOR CHARACTERS
Almost always round or three-
dimensional
characters. They have good and
bad
qualities. Their goals, ambitions and
values
change. A round character changes
as a
result of what happens to him or
her. A
character who changes inside as a
result of
what happens to him is referred to in
literature as a DYNAMIC character.
A
dynamic character grows or
progresses to a
higher level of understanding in the
course
of the story.
Protagonist
The main character in the story
Antagonist
The character or force that opposes
the
protagonist.        Foil
A character who provides a contrast
to the
protagonist.
MINOR CHARACTERS
Almost always flat or two-
dimensional
characters. They have only one or
two
striking qualities. Their predominant
quality
is not balanced by an opposite
quality. They
are usually all good or all bad. Such
characters can be interesting or
amusing in
their own right, but they lack depth.
Flat
characters are sometimes referred
to as
STATIC characters because they
do not
change in the course of the story.

Who are the characters we meet in
the
novel so far and who is your favorite
character?

Jay Gatsby - self made millionaire
with
shady business connections.
Daisy Buchanan - carefree and
charismatic
individual, former sweetheart of Jay
Gatsby.
Tom Buchanan - millionaire from old
money
who just happens to be Daisy’s
husband.
Nick Carraway - Daisy’s cousin and
Tom’s
former classmate.
Jordan Baker - pro-golfer and Daisy’
s long
time friend.
George Wilson - a local mechanic
who often
does business with Tom Buchanan .
Myrtle Wilson - wife of George
Wilson.

Comprehension Check questions:
Who so far is the protagonist in this
novella?
What is Daisy’s relationship to Tom?
Who is narrating this story?
What are the  major settings in the
novella?
What advice did the narrator’s
father give
him?
Who lives next to the narrator?
Who are the Tom Buchanans and
where do
they live?
Think critically
What inferences can we make
about the
novel’s characters and settings so
far?
Are there any parallels to Fitzgerald’
s life?
The narrator’s father gives him the
following
advice: When he feels like criticizing
anyone, he should remember that
all the
people in this world haven’t has his
advantages. In turn the narrator is
especially not to forget his father’s
suggestion that “a sense of the
fundamental
decencies is parceled out unequally
at birth”
Do you agree with Nick’s father?
What do
you think are fundamental
decencies?
Explain what West Egg and East
Egg are:

Day II:
Tom’s physical description is
important later
in the novel. How does the narrator
describe
him?
Describe Daisy. From the
description, what
actress, singer, or other well-know
figure do
you think might be like Daisy: Daisy
has a
“low, thrilling voice, a sad and lovely
face,
bright eyes, and a bright passionate
mouth.
Her most alluring asset is her voice.”
Describe Jordan Baker, and why
she is at
the Buchanans.
How do we get the distinct
impression that
Tome is a racist? What is his
explanation for
“civilization going to pieces”?
What attitude do Daisy and Jordan
have?
Bored sophistication, cynicism???
According to Jordan Baker, who
